What are little game changers?
Just little things, tiny tweaks to your routine or different ways to approach your tasks that can actually make a huge difference in your life. When you find a handy how-to, a simple shortcut, or an extraordinary step that saves you time & money, that’s definitely something to celebrate. After all, it’s the little things that can bring us the most joy, and make life so much easier that you’ll wonder why you didn’t always do things this way.
Today we bring you a list of 10 little game changers you can use to make life even better.
1. Add Cardamom To Your Coffee
No, it’s not something we invented – adding cardamom and other spices to coffee and tea is done all over the world, and a friend of ours from Jordan introduced us to this amazing combination. Strong, black coffee brewed with a few cardamom pods, sweetened with honey. Beats the pants off of the usual home brew with milk and sugar any day. We aren’t sure if we can ever go back. Coffee Game = changed.
2. Sleep With An Extra Pillow
If chronic lower back aches and pains haunt your day to day life, try sleeping with a pillow under your knees, or between your knees if you sleep on your side. The pillow under or between the knees changes the position of your pelvis and hips, which in turn can help to relax the muscles attached throughout that area, including your lower back. It’s just a little trick to help you sleep better, but getting rid of chronic lower back aches can change your whole life.
3. Use A Day Planning App
In the age of the internet, you can bet that there are apps out there for everything. If you never really got used to using those boring calendar apps that came with your phone, you’ve got to try one of the more creative approaches to personal organization that are out there. We really like Habitica – a personal organization and goal-setting program that plays like an old RPG game. Keep up with your tasks, and your player character grows, defeats enemies, and wins the day. The only thing these kinds of apps require is your own brutal honesty about how much you are getting done. Ready to play?
4. Dryer Sheets All Day
Stick them in your drawers to keep your clothes smelling laundry-day fresh. Put them under your insoles to give your socks a sweet scent. Put one in your gym bag, hide 1 or 2 in the car, and our favourite dryer sheet hack of all – stick them to the back of a fan or tape them down to the top of your air conditioner to refresh the whole house without having to spritz your furniture with upholstery spray.
5. Wet Hands Are The Best Lint Rollers
Why waste your money on a disposable lint roller? You don’t need to blow through roll after roll of sticky tape, nor do you have to spend money on one of those rubbery rollers that never really picks up much after the first few uses. Wet your hands, and move them in circles along the fabric of your pet-hair covered clothing. The hair and lint will gather from a large area into little balls under your hands, and then you can easily just pick up the lint ball and throw it away. It’s fast, free, and you don’t have to carry a lint roller around with you.
6. Invest in a Thermal Mug
Not just a “travel mug”, but a double-walled thermal mug. These babies will really keep your coffee hot and your smoothies cold for hours and hours on end. Our favourite trick is to make a big cup of ice water in a thermal mug before bed to keep on the bedside table. When you wake up in the morning, your ice water will seem like it just came out of the fridge. If you want to make your coffee the night before you can do that too! Just keep the lid on your thermal mug, and you can grab your coffee “to go” in the morning without the wait.
7. Spin Your Clothes Twice
When your wash cycle is done, give your laundry one more “spin only” cycle. It will take about 10 minutes in most machines, and can lower your drying time by as much as 50%. If you need your clothes dry in a hurry, spend 10 minutes spinning to get your clothes dry much faster.
8. Crock Pots Are The Future
We have written about the brilliance and convenience of slow cookers & crock pots many times before, and today we are doing it again. That’s how amazing slow cookers are. If you don’t have a lot of time to cook, or simply don’t know how to do much cooking beyond following packet instructions to heat and serve, the slow cooker will be more than just a little game changer for you. Any one-pot dish can be made in a slow cooker, and it doesn’t even require your skill or attention. Chili, soup, taco filling, curry, roasts, porridge – almost anything you can think of can be made in a slow cooker. Find a recipe you like, dump all your ingredients in the pot, set the timer, and get on with your life. It’s like having a personal chef. A very slow, very quiet, personal chef.
9. Apple Cider Vinegar
Not just for salad dressing! Apple Cider Vinegar’s health benefits and multiple uses around the house have been lauded for ages, so it’s time to make use of this clearly awesome life-improving product. Use a little ACV to rinse your hair in the shower, and it will come out shinier and without all that product build-up. Drop some ACV in your salad dressing or into a glass of water, and you’ve just made your digestive system very happy. Use ACV on mosquito bites, rashes, and even as a fruit-fly trap – just pour some ACV in a container, poke a few small holes in the lid for fruit flies to get in, and let them drink themselves silly (and eventually dead) on this clever, all-natural bait.
10. Eat Your Snacks With Chopsticks
This is something that Mom used to make us do when we were kids in order to stop us from scarfing down the popcorn or chips too fast. Use chopsticks on movie night when you’re tempted to grab handfuls of candy, or use them to prevent greasy, salty hands from touching your remote control. It’s also great practice for those who aren’t too used to using chopsticks yet – it’s much easier to pick up a piece of popcorn than it is to pick up slippery noodles!
