58 Seconds in India – An Aarti

An aarti at sunset in Rishikesh, India.

An aarti is an ancient ritual performed in many places all over India. The word means “a light that removes darkness”, and it often involves candles and flowers being set afloat in a nearby body of water, usually a river or holy lake. There is often singing or chanting, music, prayer, and fellowship. It is a lovely thing for any traveler to experience, so if you have the opportunity, be sure to respect local customs regarding shoes, dress, and behaviour.
