Today is February 2nd, 2017. On any given day of the year, someone in this big world of ours is happy to be celebrating something. It stands to reason that every day can be a celebration – if you know where the party is. Today TMS celebrates Groundhog Day!
Happy Groundhog Day!
Today is Groundhog Day in America and Canada.
Groundhog Day is a tradition that began in 1887, and while it is observed from coast to coast the focal point of the day is on a small town in Pennsylvania, called Punxsutawney. There, in this small rural town, lives an infamous groundhog which is said to have the powers of divination when it comes to determining the return of spring.
As legend goes, the groundhog will emerge from its burrow. If it sees its shadow and returns to the burrow quickly than winter will subsist for another six weeks. Alternatively, if the groundhog exits it burrow completely, spring will come early.
Over the last decade or two, more than one groundhog in more than one location, has served as the divining rod for this prediction and thus it has become quite ambiguous. Nonetheless, Groundhog Day is still observed throughout Canada and America, though more as a casual tradition than an official day of celebration.
In essence, Groundhog Day is really just a recognizing of the vernal equinox, the midpoint between winter and spring. You can celebrate Groundhog Day in any manner that suits you best. We here at TMS highly recommend that you observe this day with a annual viewing of the Bill Murray classic movie of the same name, though – much like the legendary Groundhog – we will leave it to you to decide.

Today’s Fauxdiac (FOH-dee-ac): Your fake horoscope.
Fauxdiac rhymes with ‘Zodiac’. It is a facetious fortune, a dubious divination, an improbable prophecy. It makes as much or as little sense as you need it to, as any good horoscope does.
