Varanasi Ghats, India
Varanasi is a city in Northern India and it sits along the banks of the sacred Ganges River. The city is famous for its silks and muslin and the Varanasi Ghats, which are filled with life from dawn to dusk, with residents meeting, bathing, praying, and living their daily lives. Marriages take place along the banks, so do deaths and cremations, whether in the hospices that overlook the river or within the ‘Black Ghats’ where bodies are prepared and burned, their remains returned to the sacred river which has provided for the city since its founding several thousand years ago.
Many indians believe that dying within the city limits will bring about salvation, thus Varanasi has remained a pilgrimage spot for many Hindu who travel to the city to spend their final days at the rivers edge. While the city is know around the world for the Varanasi Ghats, there are many, many reasons to visit.
